Canonical announced the availability of Ubuntu 13.10 for desktop and smartphone. Ubuntu’s first true mobile release delivers the streamlined core OS and mobile user interface that pave the way for full device convergence and create a unique platform for modern computing.
The full SDK and toolkit have been also made available for developers. The Ubuntu SDK enables developers to easily create applications that make use of the full capabilities of the platform and integrate naturally with the OS. As part of the app developer story both native and web are first-class citizens.
Mark Shuttleworth, Founder of Ubuntu, will be talking about open source mobile platforms at two key industry events in Silicon Valley in the next few weeks. We’ll also be demonstrating the latest 13.10 version of Ubuntu on smartphones at both GMIC on 22nd October and at Mobile Monday on 28th October.
Ubuntu held its second App Showdown contest on 7th August 2013 running for six weeks allowing contestants to build and publish their apps using the Beta Ubuntu SDK and Ubuntu platform. Both original apps and ported apps, native and HTML5 qualified in this competition. Check out the apps in Ubuntu store now: Karma Machine (original app), Saucy Bacon (original app), Snake (ported).
The Ubuntu community is developing a Facebook application for Ubuntu smartphones ready for launch. We also announced a project to create an Open Source Evernote app for Ubuntu. Both initiatives are driven by the success of the Ubuntu core apps projects.
