The Wisdom of the Dalai Lama

The July 2024 issue of Lion’s Roar focuses on the inspiring life and teachings of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. As the spiritual leader of Tibet and one of the most beloved and recognized leaders of our time, His Holiness exemplifies kindness, humility, and the wisdom needed to navigate our increasingly uncertain world.

“His Holiness is extremely broad-minded and inclusive, respecting all religions,” writes Thubten Chodron in this issue. “He dialogues with scientists, leaders of other faiths, politicians, incarcerated persons, philosophers, and the general public, sharing Buddhist philosophy, psychology, and practice with them while being keen to learn about their fields of expertise,” she continues. “In doing so, he is the ultimate twenty-first-century Buddhist, proving we don’t need to have the same beliefs to live harmoniously with others.”

Building on these remarkable qualities, our fourth annual Dalai Lama Global Vision Summit begins next week, featuring 16 presenters including meditation teachers, psychologists, physicians, scholars, and thought leaders. This event celebrates His Holiness and shares teachings, tools, and practical guidance for a more joyful life and a better future for all.

Below, you’ll find three pieces from our July 2024 issue: my own exploration of the Dalai Lama’s life and legacy, Roshi Joan Halifax on why his wisdom resonates with so many, and Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche’s account of what His Holiness means to the Tibetan people. In partnership with Tibet House US, we invite you to delve deeper into his teachings at the free Dalai Lama Global Vision Summit, starting June 13.

May this collection of wisdom awaken the heart of compassion in you.

The Heart of the Dalai Lama

Lilly Greenblatt on the life and legacy of one of the most beloved spiritual leaders of our time.

The Dalai Lama guides humanity on a path toward peace, his stewardship extending to the protection of our planet. For people across the globe, of every religious tradition, he serves as a radiant beacon of love and fervent advocate for human rights. His Holiness is a light in the darkness of our world, using his voice to teach that anger, violence, and hatred can only breed more of the same. “My religion is very simple,” he has said. “My religion is kindness.”

A Long Life Lived for All

Why is the Dalai Lama an inspiration to so many people of such diverse backgrounds? Roshi Joan Halifax explains.

With a gleam in his eye, His Holiness grabbed my hand; he probably sensed I had a question for him. My inquiry stemmed from the fact that I’d been given a rare piece of land in the upper Ojai Valley in California to begin a practice and study center. I asked him what qualities would be important in supporting the creation of such a center. His response was immediate: “Great love, great compassion, and great determination.”

A Beacon of Hope

Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche tells us what His Holiness the Dalai Lama means to the Tibetan people.

His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, is a living testament to the power of resilience and compassion. His Holiness’ path has not been easy, and yet, despite challenges and the loss of his homeland, his love for all beings has never wavered. His journey, marked by his recognition as the reincarnation of Avalokiteshvara, or Chenrezig, the bodhisattva of compassion, and his role as the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, is a beacon of hope and inspiration.

As a child, I remember hearing many stories from my father, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, about His Holiness’ great compassion and selflessness, and how he is the embodiment of wisdom. When I first met His Holiness, all my father’s stories rang true, and every time I’ve met him since, I’ve felt the unconditional love and boundless joy that radiate from him.
